Please improve memory management and thumbnail generation in S60 Feature Pack 2

I don't need any new features in S60 FP2. Please fix the following bugs:

  • Memory Management (may not be a bug, maybe N series phones just need much more memory, my guestimate would be double the current memory)
  • Thumbnail race condition with ShoZu (might be a ShoZu bug but just in case! I want my reliable ShoZu back! ShoZu on the pre S60V3 devices seemed much more reliable).

Making multiple apps run fine without running out of memory (I can make all of my N series phones run out of memory by simply running the S60 browser, surfing to flickr.com/photos/roland and using the Nokia wireless keyboard) and ShoZu work perfectly would greatly improve the S60 user experience in my opinion!

N93 Review Part 9 - S60 Browser runs out of memory with flickr and wirelesskeyboard

N93 Nokia S60 browser runs out of memory when surfing flickr and running wireless keyboard app! Roland N80i in Vancouver 108

Aaargh. The N93 S60 Browser consistently runs out of memory when surfing to flickr and using the Nokia wireless keyboard.

Hopefully fixed in next firmware upgrade. C'mon Nokia put more memory in these phones! BTW Nokia TV Out is great (this pic is of my TV)!

N91 Review Part 3 - Nokia Wireless Keyboard SU-8W does work! N80 driver works for all Series 60 v3

Colin of All about N91 commented that the N80/Series 60 v3 SU-8W driver should work and it does, thanks! D'oh. It's very confusing to figure out which device runs which variant of Series 60. In my sleep deprived state, I mistakenly thought the N90 was also a Series 60 v3 device. Nokia, please update the SU-8W driver page (and also build this into the OS or pre-install it!).

N91 Review - Part 2 - Nokia Wireless Keyboard SU-8W doesn't work - no driver

Aargh! There doesn't appear to be a Nokia Wireless Keyboard (SU-8W) driver (why is a driver required in the first place?) for the N91. I tried to install the driver for the N90 (which is also a Series 60 v3 device so it should work, right?) on the Nokia SU-8W software page but it doesn't work ('Installation of Nokia_SU8W_BTKeyboard_1_17.SIS not supported'). This is a show stopper for me using the N91 as my one and only mobile device. If anybody can point me to an SU-8W driver I would be very grateful (I'll buy you a beer the next time you are in Vancouver!). I am, of course, willing, to try a beta SU-8W driver.

N70, PuTTY and the Nokia Wireless Keyboard SU-8W a great trio

UPDATE: As always, Darla Mack has a more thorough Nokia Wireless Keyboard review.

Back in October 2005, on my way home from BarCamp Amsterdam, in a jet lagged stupor, I picked up a Nokia Bluetooth Keyboard aka the SU-8W. Maybe it was me, maybe it was the earlier version of the software, maybe it was my old grey market 7610, its old firmware, and its limited RAM but it did not work very well. The keyboard would disconnect and power down after a certain period of time and it did not reconnect when you rebooted the keyboard.

I am glad to say that it works much better with my N70. For work and fun (!) I monitor several servers. Now wherever I go, I carry my N70 and the SU-8W and monitor and tinker with the servers remotely using PuTTY (which allows me to login and work on my servers securely over SSH). It works really well (the keyboard automatically reconnects when you turn it on, unlike my 7610). Highly recommended.

Nokia, please introduce a series 60 phone with a 3 megapixel camera, optical zoom, macro mode and 640x480 video and a keyboard. I will pay for one of these bricks :-) (basically an N93 with a keyboard!) with my own money!
